South Gate football death lawsuit filed against LAUSD

Source: ABC7 Los Angeles

Quick Answer: ABC7 Los Angeles and CBS Los Angeles reported that Christopher Garcia's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against LAUSD after the 16-year-old South East High School football player suffered a fatal brain injury during a 2024 game. LAUSD told ABC7 it does not comment on pending or ongoing litigation.

What the reports say

ABC7 Los Angeles reported that Garcia suffered the injury after making a defensive tackle during a 2024 game and that family attorneys released footage showing his head striking the field. ABC7 reported that Garcia was placed into a medically induced coma and died 11 days later.

CBS Los Angeles reported that the lawsuit says LAUSD failed to provide safe facilities, proper equipment and adequate supervision. CBS attributed to attorney Ken Henderson the view that field condition, concussion protocols and the helmet are among the issues being examined, while no single factor can be blamed for Garcia's death.

District response and local context

ABC7 reported that LAUSD said district policy requires qualified medical personnel at games and that two medical staff members were on site and provided immediate attention. ABC7 reported that the family disputes LAUSD's account and argues an ambulance should have been present.

FOX 11 Los Angeles reported that the family and legal team say Garcia had been asked to participate in a varsity game on Aug. 23, 2024, and that the legal action aims to prevent a similar loss. FOX 11 reported that LAUSD said it does not comment on pending or ongoing litigation.
