Countertop Maker Sues Zurich Over Injury Suit Coverage

Source: Bloomberg Law

Bloomberg Law reported on Aug. 17 that Georgia Stone Quarries sued Zurich American Insurance Co. and related insurers after they allegedly refused to defend the countertop manufacturer in 130 bodily injury lawsuits.

Bloomberg Law reported that the California coverage case concerns defense obligations for underlying countertop exposure lawsuits. California's Department of Industrial Relations says artificial stone countertop fabrication has produced hundreds of reported silicosis cases among California workers.

According to Bloomberg Law, the underlying lawsuits against Georgia Stone Quarries were filed in California courts and allege harm from exposure to components in the company's countertop products. Bloomberg Law reported that the new complaint, filed Aug. 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, says policies bought by GSQ's parent company since 2007 required the insurers to defend and pay covered bodily injury claims during policy periods.

Bloomberg Law attributed the allegations to the complaint. The insurers' response was not included in the excerpt available from Bloomberg Law at publication time, and the underlying injury claims remain allegations unless a court or settlement record establishes liability.

California worker-safety context

The California Department of Industrial Relations says workers who fabricate countertops from artificial stone can face dangerous levels of respirable crystalline silica. In an employer fact sheet, DIR reported that from January 2019 through March 2025, 294 California artificial stone countertop workers developed silicosis, 15 died, 31 received lung transplants and 26 others were disabled while awaiting a possible lung transplant.

DIR also said Cal/OSHA inspections from 2019 through 2024 found broad non-compliance with California's respirable crystalline silica standard in the artificial stone fabrication industry. The department said Cal/OSHA made strengthened protections permanent in February 2025.

Why this case may matter in Los Angeles injury news

The Bloomberg Law report describes an insurance coverage dispute, not a ruling on any worker's injury claim. Still, the dispute connects to the same California court system and exposure evidence issues that can appear in serious workplace and product injury litigation.
