The Los Angeles Fire Department said a Sept. 15 Metro bus and SUV collision in Chatsworth left two people dead and six people transported to local hospitals. KTLA reported that a news helicopter covering the bus crash later went down nearby, and NBC Los Angeles reported three people died in that helicopter crash.
Bus Collision on Nordhoff Street
The Los Angeles Fire Department's 5:03 p.m. physical rescue alert placed the collision at 20900 W. Nordhoff St. in Chatsworth and said firefighters were extricating trapped patients and assessing bus passengers. In a later update, LAFD said the incident produced eight patients: six transported to local hospitals and two determined dead at the scene.
KTLA reported that the driver of an SUV slammed into the side of a Metro bus at West Nordhoff Street and De Soto Avenue, and KTLA quoted LAFD Capt. Branden Silverman saying both people who died were on the bus. ABC7 reported that AIR7 video showed a Ford SUV lodged in the left side of the bus and that one person killed was reportedly ejected while another was killed onboard.
Helicopter Crash Nearby
NBC Los Angeles reported that NewsChopper4, operated by Angel City Air for NBCLA and Telemundo 52, crashed in Chatsworth while covering the bus collision. NBC Los Angeles identified two of the people killed as journalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw, citing the station's own confirmation and statements from local officials.
LAFD's aircraft-crash update said 56 firefighters responded to 9151 N. Mason Ave., where the helicopter crash damaged four automobiles and two storage containers. LAFD said three patients were determined dead at the scene, one patient was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition, and the NTSB and FAA would handle the aircraft investigation.
